Do you have your "MOST FAVORITE DESTINATION OF ALL TIME? I sure do, and it is hands down, without a doubt, BORA BORA!!! It is truly as magical as the pictures!
In 2016, our 30th Wedding Anniversary, my husband and I traveled to Bora Bora and had an absolutely amazing experience that we will never forget! This is definitely a trip that should be planned with an experienced travel agent as it is a little complicated. You have to fly into Papeete, Tahiti, then fly to Bora Bora's Airport (ferry is also an option), and then take a boat to your resort. This is also not a budget vacation and is definitely a luxury experience, perfect for that "Special Celebration"! When you fly over Bora Bora make sure that you take pictures as it is breathtaking! I also strongly recommend staying in an overwater bungalow, even if your budget only allows for 3 nights and then you can transfer to a different room category if necessary.
Depending on how much time you have I would also suggest that you visit another island , such as Moorea, to see the diversity of French Polynesia. Although choose your month carefully as Moorea can be extremely wet during the rainy season which is November to April (but you can get some pretty good pricing). We went the end of October/beginning of November and it was great (We did have one rainy day in Moorea). May to October is the dry season but will also have the most tourists. The shoulder months, April and November are good choices as you may get a little better pricing but also have less people.
It is important to know that food can be expensive in French Polynesia. Many travelers benefit from pre-purchasing a dining plan. For light eaters a dining plan may not be beneficial but that is something you should evaluate.
One "MUST" is a snorkeling or diving tour! The snorkeling in Bora Bora is "OUT OF THIS WORLD"!! And I have snorkeled many reefs, including The Great Barrier Reef, Belize, Cozumel, and Curacao. Bora Bora snorkeling is definitely in a class of it's own!
A surprise to myself and my husband is that there were a lot of young couples at our resort. It is definitely an extraordinary place for honeymooners! Also, remember French Polynesia is a French Territory, so French is the official language and the French Pacific Franc is the currency.
A cruise is another fantastic way to see Bora Bora and other French Polynesia islands. A pre or post stay in a Resort with an overwater bungalow is strongly recommended.
There are still so many destinations on my bucket list and most will be one time adventures but because of Bora Bora's picturesque beauty, I have put it back on my list! I must see it one more time while I am still on this earth! Until we meet again Bora Bora!!
